This day was so remarkable. I had learn so many things and realized something valuable, that is: how to live your life wisely. We had our Bilibid Exposure Trip (Medium Security Camp) today. I wasn't so scared after all because we get to experience almost the same last year, when we had our Outreach Program in Bacoor City Jail last December as part of the Founding Anniversary Program of our school.
Going back to the story, when we were in the camp, there was a program and an interaction between the inmates; and this is what makes it different from the previous experience I had because unlike before, we only just give our donations to the inmates with steel bars that serves as the demarcation line between us and them.
This time, we get to talk with them face-to-face, one-on-one and ask them questions. They would even still tour us around the camp. I had interviewed one and I hope you/he would not mind if I will tell in public his name and experiences.
An Inmate's Experience
He was *Kuya Anthony, he was in the camp for 9 years for doing something that a usual fraternity member/leader would do. (I know, you know what it is) Speaking of a leader, he was a former president of a fraternity that is very infamous until now and which everyone knows, surely. He was sentenced for 10 years imprisonment and next year, he will face the real world once again.
He had told me that, at first he was regretful of what he has done. He never imagined that he can do something brutal, for he only foresaw it as an experience, and not that is something he would be guilty of. But then, as he face his 10 years imprisonment in the Bureau of CORRECTIONS, he had learned so many things which made him more contented with what happen to him.
The Programs
He said that there were various program that would help make them busy and at the same time be closer to GOD. One of which is a Free Education Program sponsored by the University of Perpetual Help Dalta, Industrial and Entrepreneurship Programs that would help them earn while they are inside the camp. Another is the Filipino Christian Living Program wherein they were taught to have faith in GOD and he will never forget them.
The Lesson
He also told me that we, (I am addressing it to everyone) as students should focus more on our studies and do good things in life. He said that we should learn from their experiences. He also told me that his experience in jail was something that made their family stronger, his faith in God tighter and his trust and confidence to himself was brought back because though he was inside the jail he was able to finish his bachelor degree major in management because of the programs facilitated inside the camp.
The Problem
He said that the only problem inside was: Lack of Medical Assistance, and this was something that striked me most and that government officials should have an action to. According to him, when someone gets sick, they would go to the clinic. But then, because of limited supplies on Medicine. They would be given tablets, capsules or ointments that would not match with what they were feeling. One example is this:
"When someone feels itchy, he will be given sleeping pill so that he would just fall asleep and forget the itchiness that they feel."
"When someone has toothache, he will be given pampapurga."
"When someone has stomachache, he will be given paracetamol, a medicine that cures only headache."
This situations are really true and is currently happening in the camp. I hope that if someone on position would read this, he/she can be able to give some action regarding these problems.
To sum things up..
I have realized that life is short and that we need to do the very best we can to make it something remarkable, valuable and pleasing in the eyes of GOD.
